Adventure parks use safety belay systems to provide participants with a fun experience without any unpleasant events.
There are several types of safety belay systems, and they are used depending on the style and location of the adventure park.
In all safety belay systems the participant (the customer) wears a protective harness equipped with various accessories. The accessories located on the harness (carabinier, pulleys, magnets, etc.) are the items with the help of which the participant is anchored on the safety belay system.
The accessories are chosen depending on the type of safety belay system, the two needing to be compatible.
Before completing the courses, each participant is trained by the park staff on how to use the safety belay system and the rules put in place for their protection.
The safety belay systems, according to the European standard EN 15567-1: 2015, are divided into 5 categories, from A to E. Class A is the one with the highest risk of injury, class E being the safest for participants.
System 1
Continuous lifeline (Class E)
This is the safety belay system most often used by us in the construction of parks. The system consists of:
- uninterrupted steel cable (from the beginning to the end of the course)
- ZAZA 2 metal plates from Coudou Pro when joining track elements
- safety harness with a carabinier compatible with the ZAZA 2 system and a normal carabinier
- zip pulleys (optional)
- climbing helmet
This safety belay system is considered to be among the safest, due to the fact that one of the participant’s carbines cannot be removed from the continuous cable without finishing the course.
The carabiner compatible with the ZAZA 2 system is inserted on the safety cable when entering the course and it detaches at the end of it or, if necessary, it can be detached with a special key that the park staff has. The other carabine (normal carabine), attached to the participant’s harness, must be opened and moved manually by the participant to the appropriate places.
Benefits:
- reducing the number of employees required to supervise participants
- very high level of safety for participants
- elimination of injury risks by up to 99%
- the supervisor’s stress on the posibility of participants’ getting injured is minimal
- one of the carabiners cannot be detached from the cable
- carabiniers can support up to 5000kg
- minimal maintenance
- easy to use by participants
Disadvantages:
- implementation costs 10% higher than Class A and B safety belay systems
System 2
Safety belay system with communicating carabiners (Classes C and D)
This safety belay system is quite rare in adventure parks in Romania, and it consists of:
- steel cable mounted at the same level with the elements
- safety harness with two special carabiniers that cannot be opened at once
- zip pulleys (optional)
- climbing helmet
In this safety belay system, the participants on the routes have attached to the harnesses two special carabiniers, connected to each other, which do not allow their simultaneous opening, but allow detachment from the cable. And they must be moved manually, one by one, to the appropriate places during the routes.
According to their mode of operation, when one of them is opened by the participant to be moved, the other locks and cannot be opened until the other is closed. Among the popular manufacturers of such smart carabiniers is Edelrid, being one of our suppliers.
Benefits:
- the safety belay system is safer than the classic one (classes A and B)
- carabiniers can support up to 5000kg
- easy to implement in existing parks
Disadvantages:
- both carabiners can be detached from the cable in certain situations
- high staff costs – requires more staff for supervision
- system more expensive than classes A, B and E
high maintenance costs from the manufacturer
This safety belay system is quite common in adventure parks in Romania and it consists of:
- steel cable mounted at the same level with the elements
- safety harness with two normal carabiniers opening
- zip pulleys (optional)
- climbing helmet
In this safety belay system, the participants on the routes have attached to the harnesses two carabiniers that can be opened and must be moved manually, one by one, to the appropriate places during the courses.
According to the safety rules, the carbiniers must be opened and moved one at a time, so that one of them is attached to the safety cable at any time (in the event of an imbalance when moving them). Each carabinier, like the ones from Petzl that we use, is capable of supporting up to 2500kg, together they can support up to 5000kg.
Benefits:
- classic system: 2 carabiniers for the safety belay
- carabiniers can support up to 5000kg
- low implementation cost compared to other classes
Disadvantages:
- high risk of injury for participants, due to the possibility of detachment of both carabiniers
- high staff costs – requires more staff for supervision
System 4
Spotting Assisted Safety System
This type of safety belay system is not dependent on the height of the course, but the safety of the participant is performed by people on the ground, ready to catch, hold or support the participant, to cover the course.
This type of safety belay system depends on the strength of the people from the ground and is often used in conjunction with the group safety belay system (System 5) to provide extra protection.
Assisted safety belay system is often used on adventure park courses and climbing panels where team-buildings are organized. Team-building exercises with assisted safety belay system provide a good opportunity to communicate and increase trust in other team members.
System 5
Group safety belay system
This type of safety belay system can be used only in the case of courses and adventure park elements built at a maximum height of 1m from the ground. The group safety belay systems consist of various objects / elements that prevent injury and assist the participant in completing the courses. Group safety belay systems include:
- safety nets under the course
- support bars
- mattresses or sponges on the floor
